Flashback - University at Albany Suspends Implants Research
Albany professor whose work is at issue focused on surgically inserted mind-control devices

The University at Albany has shut down the research of a psychology professor probing the “X-Files” world of government surveillance and mind control.

At conferences, in papers and research over two semesters, Professor Kathryn Kelley explored the claims of those who say they were surgically implanted with communications devices to read their thoughts.

Israel considering strike on Iran despite US intelligence report
Although Israel argues that it wants to see strong diplomatic pressure put on Iran, it is reluctant to rule out the threat of a unilateral military attack. Matan Vilnai, Israel's deputy defence minister, told Army Radio today: "No option needs to be off the table."

Democrats Call for Inquiry in Destruction of Tapes by C.I.A.
Democratic lawmakers called for investigations today into the Central Intelligence Agency’s destruction in 2005 of at least two videotapes documenting the interrogation of two Qaeda operatives in the agency’s custody. “We haven’t seen anything like this since the 181/2拓 minute gap on the tapes of Richard Nixon,” Mr. Kennedy said in a speech on the Senate floor, as reaction to the disclosure about the videotapes seemed to intensify minute by minute.

Secret DoJ Legal Memos: Bush Determines What Is Constitutional
The President, exercising his constitutional authority under Article II, can determine whether an action is a lawful exercise of the President’s authority under Article II.

Cia's Destruction of Tapes Likely to Spur Lawsuits
The Central Intelligence Agency's admission that it destroyed at least two videotapes of harsh interrogations of terror suspects has caused an uproar in Washington and seems almost certain to lead to legal challenges to the agency's actions.

The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee called for a full investigation of the matter, while the American Civil Liberties Union charged that the shredding of the tapes was more evidence of the Bush administration's long-term pattern of shielding government officials from criminal prosecution for torture and abuse.

Ron Paul Blimp' more than an ad campaign; a test of finance laws
The current plan to fly the blimp from North Carolina to New Hampshire, Politico says, is more than just a way for some of Paul's Libertarian Party fans to advertise their support for the candidate: It will effectively test the limits of campaign finance rules by using an innovative funding structure that could become a new way to pour unregulated funds into politics.

House vote on illegal images sweeps in Wi-Fi, Web sites
The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill saying that anyone offering an open Wi-Fi connection to the public must report illegal images including "obscene" cartoons and drawings or face fines of up to $300,000.

That broad definition would cover individuals, coffee shops, libraries, hotels, and even some government agencies that provide Wi-Fi. It also sweeps in social-networking sites, domain name registrars, Internet service providers, and e-mail service providers such as Hotmail and Gmail, and it may require that the complete contents of the user's account be retained for subsequent police inspection.

Plan to conduct surveillance with drones stirs some privacy concerns

Digital Era or Digital Surveillance?
In the new century, digital information has come to our society with a sweet message that promises a more convenient, better-off and, therefore, happier world to all humankind.

But most people overlooked the dark shadow behind the ``rosy'' picture alienation of human beings in the concrete jungle, the wrong values of a material civilization and the death of the individual caused by the end of privacy.

Paul right to oppose Iran war; intelligence report is the proof

Simply outrageous
Fresh from Washington and words of peace and goodwill, practically the first thing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert does is tell his people, in a classic manoeuvre that Israel normally accused Yasser Arafat of, that he in no way feels bound by any date at the end of 2008 to wrap up negotiations with the Palestinian side, exactly contrary to what was agreed at Annapolis.

C.I.A. Destroyed Tapes of Interrogations
The videotapes showed agency operatives in 2002 subjecting terror suspects including Abu Zubaydah, the first detainee in C.I.A. custody to severe interrogation techniques. They were destroyed in part because officers were concerned that tapes documenting controversial interrogation methods could expose agency officials to greater risk of legal jeopardy, several officials said.

Free-Energy Battery Inventor Killed at Airport?

Nanotechnology a 'bigger concern' than GM foods
Opponents to nanotechnology say it is a much scarier prospect than GM food, and while it can make food look better and last longer, there are fears about how it might affect the human body.

The unknown risk in nanotechnology
Research on animals suggests that nanoparticles can even evade some of the body's natural defence systems and accumulate in the brain, cells, blood and nerves. Studies show there is the potential for such materials to cause pulmonary inflammation; to move from the lungs to other organs; to have surprising biological toxicity; to move from within the skin to the lymphatic system; and possibly to move across cell membranes.

Toxic Secrets
Some 50 years after United States authorities began adding fluoride to public water supplies to reduce cavities in children's teeth, recently discovered declassified government documents are shedding new light on the roots of that still-controversial public health measure, revealing a surprising connection between the use of fluoride and the dawning of the nuclear age.

Guantánamo Detainees' Fate at Stake in Boumediene
By Marjorie Cohn

The Supreme Court will hear arguments on Wednesday in Boumediene v. Bush. Most of the 34 detainees whose fate hangs in the balance in this case were brought to Guantánamo after being picked up by bounty hunters or tribesmen in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Yet the Bush administration has fought hard to keep them away from any independent court where they could contest the legality of their confinement.

Hearing Impaired Man Tased by Police
Police forced entry into Williams home while responding to a shooting, but it turned out to be a false call.  They had no idea at the time the call wasn't real and that Williams is hearing impaired.  Without his hearing aid he is basically deaf.

Officers were worried about their own safety because at the time it appeared Williams was refusing to obey their commands to show his hands.  That's when they shot him with a Taser.

Despite report, Giuliani's tough talk on Iran goes on
On the stump, Giuliani has been more bellicose. He has called Iran a bigger danger than Iraq. He has made it a "promise," not a "threat," that he would "set them back 8 or 10 years" if the country was on the brink of becoming a nuclear power.

"We will not take the military option off the table," Giuliani said at a campaign stop in Central Florida. "We will not beg to negotiate with them. We're going to make them beg to negotiate to us."

Lawyer believes conspirators hold key to brother's death
Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols says in a new declaration that a lawyer claiming to represent the U.S. Department of Justice offered to stop his trial on state murder charges if he admitted to alerting the FBI in a telephone call to the planned attack the day before it was carried out in 1995.

Nichols writes in his declaration submitted Monday in a Utah lawsuit by Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue concerning the death of his brother that he never made such a call.
